Legislation to allow Choptank Electric Cooperative to become Member-Regulated and deliver broadband to members on the Eastern Shore passed unanimously in the Maryland General Assembly on March 18, 2020, and became effective on May 7, 2020.
What is Member-Regulation? Member-Regulation is the form of regulation for 83% of the 850 electric cooperatives nationwide. This removes a portion of Maryland Public Service Commission regulation in favor of additional oversight by our democratically-elected Board of Directors. Choptank expects this will add efficiency and flexibility to benefit the Cooperative and its members.
Pursuant to the new law, Choptank held informational meetings and conducted a vote of its members on whether to become a Member-Regulated Cooperative. On August 13, 2020, the results were in -- 33% of Choptank’s members turned out to vote, with 98% voting in favor of Member-Regulation.
