Choptank Electric to host Girl Power on October 3 in Salisbury
Denton, Md – Choptank Electric Cooperative will host a one-day Girl Power camp at their Regional Service Center in Salisbury, Md. on October 3 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. for high school girls interested in the energy industry. The Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC) will lead the experience for young women interested in working on a line crew, in a substation, with advanced metering technology or as a fiber broadband technician.
"We are excited to welcome young women across the Eastern Shore to explore the electric utility industry and reach new heights,” said Mike Malandro, President & CEO of Choptank Electric. "Choptank is proud to be a part of the fourth annual VMDAEC event and bring this camp to our region and expand the reach across Maryland."
Instructors from local electric cooperatives will guide students through various activities in the classroom and outdoors. Participants will learn about safety on the job, including how to climb a utility pole and operate a bucket truck. Students will also individually meet with industry human resources professionals to review their resumes and discuss interviewing best practices. Other representatives will be available to answer questions about career paths and workplace culture. New this year is a meeting with industry accounting and finance professionals.
Entry-level operations roles can often lead to a variety of other opportunities within an organization, including leadership roles. Electric cooperatives and their industry partners are committed to attracting more young women to these types of roles.
