Choptank Electric's 2020 Youth Tour Selected Applicants Highlighted

Choptank Electric Cooperative has selected five outstanding students to represent them during the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) 2020 Youth Tour program which will take place June 21 – 25, 2020 in Washington, D.C.

  • Alyssa Boltz, Mardela High School

  • Thomas Connolley, Bohemia Manor High School

  • Quinn Thompson Handel, The Salisbury School

  • Lauren Kang, The Salisbury School

  • Owen Mank, Colonel Richardson High School

Every year, Choptank Electric sends five high school juniors on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Washington, D.C. to meet congressmen and senators, visit the U.S. Capitol Visitor’s Center, tour the Capitol building, visit local memorials and museums, and other historic sites. In previous Youth Tour trips, students have attended Nationals’ baseball games, the Kennedy Center, and the Pentagon. In addition, selected students will meet over 1,800 other co-op member students from across the country.  With this opportunity, our candidates can also gain exclusive leadership training and opportunities that build connections and skills that assist in their future career paths.

To apply for this opportunity, students had to fill out an application, write a 500-word essay about the Cooperative business model, and create a 90-second video about themselves.

Unfortunately, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has caused organizers to cancel the 2020 Youth Tour to safeguard the health of its more than 1,500 participants. The cancellation should not diminish the achievement of the youths who were tapped for the prestigious honor, as well as the many volunteer chaperones. They represent the best of their co-ops and we appreciate their commitment to Youth Tour.
