Choptank Fiber Full Steam Ahead!

First interest meeting and exciting grant funding news for the broadband company.

On July 21, Choptank Electric held a broadband community meeting in Somerset County. During the meeting, members who reside in recently funded service zones were informed about Choptank Fiber, its packages, and how the connection process works. Attendees participated in an open dialogue about deployment plans and the resources needed to move forward with the massive, 10-year project.
One of the ways to accelerate infrastructure development is to seek grant funding in partnership with federal, state, and local authorities. We are pleased to announce that the 2021 Broadband Infrastructure Grant Program awarded Choptank Electric and its subsidiary, Choptank Fiber, over $7 million to fund projects in Caroline, Queen Anne’s, and Somerset counties. These projects must be built out over the next three years.
Because of the infusion of federal funds through the American Rescue Plan Act passed by Congress earlier this year, broadband grants were 20% higher than expected.
Governor Larry Hogan, through the Office of Statewide Broadband, says, “Our hope is that the savings from the matching contribution will be used to accelerate Choptank Fiber’s broadband expansion plans.”
This funding is conditional upon execution of a grant agreement between Choptank Electric Cooperative, Inc. and the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.
